It is the most difficult object in the world to depict. It is so complex – yet you must strive to make it simple. It expresses everything we want to know or feel about ourselves as human, and every change of stroke of your pencil or brush suggests a different attitude by the model. Either in spite of the difficulties, or because of those very same challenges, I find it the most satisfying subject for art.

                Whether the figure is clothed or nude, one must have a solid grasp of anatomy. I teach this subject at the Schuler School of Fine Arts. There is always something more to learn about it.

                No two artists approach the figure with the same style, technique, or evaluation. But more than any other genre, figurative works tell the world what you really think about ourselves, we amazing humans. It tells us your view of us – as an artist and, yes, by your response, as the viewer.
