I have always loved these construction cranes. They seem like benevolent giants, lifting a new building up around their legs, as if pulling on their trousers. One sees them all around the world, wherever men have hope and industry. They begin life at ground level, but ascend with their buildings, ever higher. I wanted to recreate this sense of uplift, and, therefore, I must ask that this painting be hung so that the bottom of the painting is at least at eye level. (An eight foot ceiling will not do.)
Its title is a play on the Roman Catholic liturgy—”Benedicite omnia opera Dominis Domini” - Bless ye the Lord, all ye works of the Lord. But, say I, “Benedicite Homini omnia operaque Hominis” - Blessed be Man and blessed be all His works.
